RE: My first Diesel - Newbee Question

Jump starting anything these days (with new vehicles) is risky business IMO. I will only do it when there's no other option. Fried (expensive) computer components can result.
I have given a vehicle a jump start with my previous Dodge/Cummins. I just hooked the cables up, and shut my truck completely off. That way, he used my batteries, not my whole electrical/charging system.

RE: Dodge 3500 cab & chassis

Just a thought, but if you're looking at a C+C, why not check out the price difference for a Dodge 4500 or 5500? Maybe a little extra GVWR/GAWR will be needed someday - depends on your 5er obviously.

RE: Sterling, another option?

I think they're only available with a 6.7L Cummins diesel, at least the "Bullet" class 4 and 5 are.

RE: Dodge heating up when towing

The fan in my 2002 Dodge/Cummins 2500 was quite effective at highway speed. The temp could creep up when towing uphill, even with very good airflow through the rad. When the clutch cut in on the cooling fan and I heard the roar, I also saw the temp drop slowly. BTW, I had removed the rad two years earlier and cleaned it with a pressure washer. It was clean as when new.

RE: Best MPG?

This past weekend, I took a trip in a 2004 Dodge 2500 LB 4x4 Quad cab (305hp version) Cummins with an auto trans and a 3.73 axle. It made 24 mpg with no A/C at 65mph.

RE: Best MPG?

The Cummins and Duramax are pretty close in mpg. I prefer the Cummins, I'm on my 2nd one. I wouldn't hesitate to own a Duramax, however, with the single condition that it not be a 2004.5 or 2005 LLY Duramax as these can be prone to overheating when towing due to an engineering flaw.
I'd suggest a 2001 - 2004 Duramax, or a 2001 - 2006 Cummins (note that the cab was redesigned for the 2003 model year with a much quiter engine with more power).
I bought my dream truck a few weeks ago. I am very happy with my decision. On the 500 mile drive from where I bought it, it got a high of 22 mpg hwy, and averaged 19 over the whole trip. It went over 500 miles (854 Km) with an indicated 1/4 of a tank of diesel remaining.

RE: My first Diesel - Newbee Question

Since the jump starting question has been answered, all I have to add is to let the turbo cool a bit before shutting the engine down after a hard pull. For example, it would be bad to pull a trailer up a steep grade, then stop to enjoy the view at the top by pulling over and shuttign it off immediately. Let it idle for a minute or two after working it hard before shutting it down.

Either vehicle will tow that trailer just fine.

RE: Is My F350 and Jayco 313RKS Doing OK?

GAWRs always add up to more than GVWR, check my sig for my truck's example (top of this page). That's normal.
Like I said, as long as you are under the GAWRs, I'd say you're OK.

RE: Dodge 4500

Another reason I've read for the "derating" of the engines hp/tq is because they are in a commercial application where they are expectedx to run at a higher duty cycle (loaded heavier more of their life) than a standard pickup. It makes them use less fuel and last longer while working hard.

RE: Frame Rusting ...Winter Prep Package?

By a rattle can of black asphalt undercoating (like a thick black spray paint) and spray it on yourself. It lasts and you can paint it right over rust.

RE: Ford's latest reflash does indeed improve mileage

I doubt they'll go 200K without service. I believe the idea is they be removed and cleaned with what looks like a Monster Garage type Vacuum. My thinking is that they may be rusty and fall apart when they attempt to remove them, and they'll need to be replaced.
That goes for all the brands equipped with a DPF, not just Ford.

RE: Is My F350 and Jayco 313RKS Doing OK?

F350s FGAWR is usually 5200 - 5600# depending on options.
The rear GAWR is ~7000# IIRC.

RE: Sold on Dodge Mega Cab...

I can't speak to the 6.7L mpg from experience, but I have read the 6.7L gets the same to less mpg than the 5.9L.
I have the 5.9L in a 2007 Megacab 3500 SRW, and couldn't be happier. It greats great mileage for a big truck (22 mpg hwy is the best so far, 20 is typical, 19 in windy or hilly conditions). Haven't towed too much with it yet (haven't used a full tank of diesel just pulling), so don't have hand calculated numbers to report for that - but the overhead trip computer says 11-12mpg when towing my 9500# 34' RV.
My truck has about 2800# payload (based on it's 7300# weight deducted from 10100# GVWR), and if I use the same weight and a 2500 trucks GVWR of 9000#, I'd have 1700# payload. That's why I chose the 3500 SRW.
Note that the only mechanical difference between a 3500 SRW and a 2500 is that the 3500 SRW has a factory overload spring. You can see it here in this photo on top of the regular springs.

Also, I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I think the read seats are extremely comfortable. There's a ton of room, and the seats recline - a feature found in no other pickup.

You will be slightly above GVWR, but not by much. I wouldn't worry about that. As long as you're not exceeding the GAWRs.

I'm confused. Your sig shows a 98 5.7L Chev 2500, your post says F350 2500HD SRW 350???
